Boylston National Bank is robbed of nearly half a million dollars.
November 21, 1869
The bank is located on Washington Street. In committing the largest robbery in the city’s history to date, the robbers, led by Charles Bullard, had rented a building next door to the bank and tunneled through 36-inches of masonry walls. Bullard is subsequently captured and sentenced to Concord Prison, from which he later escapes. The bank is robbed again in 1897.*
